PROJECT’S ACTIVITIES

The project was developed through the implementation of three types of activities:
A - transnational events;
B - preparatory actions;
C - dissemination actions.
Let's see in detail the activities carried out.

A - TRANSNATIONAL EVENTS

REALIZATION OF SIX TRANSNATIONAL EVENTS
The transnational events have been realized according to a format including three elements:

1. Discussion Panel, facilitated with an original approach, “Open Narrating Space”, given by the union of Open Space Technology and Autobiographical Methods, , for a effective discussion in big groups based on the direct experiences of participants about the themes;
2. Visiting important local situations and meeting with representatives;
3. Events in public space as dissemination actions. Particularly, each event have seen a focus on a specific theme.

Here a short description of the events:


1° EVENT - Palermo, Lampedusa, Italy, January 16 -17-18, 2017

Focus of the Event was: “Migration Policies in Europe”.
The first day in Palermo started with conference on migration policies in Europe in the morning; the afternoon saw the creation of a panel on "Migration Policies in Europe".
The second day was held in Lampedusa, where several activities were carried out, and several meetings with local realities, including the mayor of Lampedusa.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 71 people, of which: 52 Italian participants, coming from different cities: Rome, Palermo, Siena, Lampedusa and Marsala; 3 participants from Germany, Berlin; 2 participants from Spain, Donostia San Sebastian; 2 participants from France, Paris; 2 participants from Greece, Athens; 2 participants from Romania; 1 participant from Poland, Białystok; 2 participants from Hungary, Budapest; 3 participants from Tunisia (Italian guests). The public events were attended by about 200 people.


2° EVENT - Budapest, Hungary, April 27-29, 2017

Focus of the event was: "How to overcome stereotypes about migrants?".
The first day of activities started with a working session of the international group, which worked on the implementation of project activities.
The afternoon saw an open pubic conference on the event theme, with the participation of the representative of the European Commission in Hungary, and many organizations working with migrants. The second day of the event was focused on the pubblic panel "How to overcome stereotypes about migrants?", with the participation of many citizens and stakeholders, and memeber of social civici society organizations.
In the evening the activity saw the pubblic screening of the movie "The Citizen", a very interesti movie on migration in Hungary.
On the last day of the meeting the international group actively participated in a sporting activity with young refugees, organized by Oltalom Sport Association, that holds regular integrating football trainings and tournaments for refugee players.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 83 people, including: 63 participants from Hungary, Budapest; 13 Italian participants, coming from different cities: Rome and Siena; 2 participants from Berlin, Germany; 2 participants from Spain, Donostia San Sebastian; 2 participants from France, Paris; 2 participants from Romania, Bucharest.
The public events were attended by about 100 people.


3° EVENT - Athen, Greece, June 28-30, 2017

Focus of the event was: “How to put a barrier to the spread of xenophobic and racist attitudes and visions?”
The first day of activities started with a working session of the international group, which worked on the implementation of the project activities, in particular on the activation of the "Narrating the dialogue" competition.
The afternoon saw a visit to CITYPLAZA, a very interesting migrants occupation in Athen; an abandoned hotel, which with the owners' agreement was made available to migrants and refugees, who, supported by international volunteers, coordinate this cohabitation very effectively. This reality is an emblematic example of how volunteering is playing a very important role in Europe to respond to the social crisis linked to the migratory emergency.
The second day saw the open public conference: “How to put a barrier to the spread of xenophobic and racist attitudes and visions?”, with representatives of EU Commission and local authorities.
The event was held at Athene Europe Direct Center.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 33 people, including: 9 participants from Greece, Athens; 16 Italian participants, coming from different cities: Rome and Siena; 2 participants from Germany, Berlin; 1 participant from Spain, Donostia San Sebastian; 2 participants from Romania, Bucharest; 1 participant from Poland, Białystok; 2 participants from Hungary, Budapest. The public events were attended by about 100 people.


4° EVENT - Siena, Italy, September 6-8, 2017

Focus of the event was: "How to develop the participation of migrants in civil society".
The Siena event saw a pre-event day 5, with the public conference: "The change of the imaginary about the Migrants", Narratives, prejudices and stereotypes in the television series "The Commissioner Montalbano" and "The Phantasms of Portopalo" ". The conference was introduced by greetings from the Rector of the University for Foreigners of Siena.
September 6, the first day of the transnational meeting, included the following activities:
- Co-ordination Meeting of Project Partners Working Groups , Fondazione Monte dei Paschi di Siena;
- Greetings from the Mayor of the Municipality of Siena, Palazzo Pubblico – Comune di Siena
- Pubblic meeting: " The migration crisis and Italian and European policies ", Palazzo Pubblico – Sala delle Lupe, with the participation of representatives of the Ministry of Interior, and of the Prefect of Siena.
Presentation of the document "10 points for a new migration policy in Europe", with a representatve of Asgi - Association for Legal Studies on Immigration.
The second day, 7 of September, saw several public meeting:
- "Experiences of integration at local and national level" (Università per Stranieri di Siena)
- "How to develop the participation of migrants in civil society?" (Università di Siena).
The day ended with a big pubblic event, the concert of "The Orchestra of Piazza Vittorio", Teatro dei Rozzi, Siena, with the participation of more then 500 people.
Friday, September 8th, started with the panel open to the public: “How to develop the participation of migrants in civil society?" (Provincia di Siena, Piazza Duomo); the activity saw the Greeting of the President of the Province of Siena, and the Intervention by the Tuscany Region for the presentation of the "White Paper on the reception policies of asylum seekers and international protection".
During the meeting and in the previous days, some artistic installations were placed in different places in Siena, specifically created for the project by an Italian artist; the installation, entitled "All different, all part of the same picture ...", was composed of large empty frames in public spaces; citizens were invited to photograph themselves in these frames together with people from other cultures, and post their photos with the project's hastag.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 80 people, of which: 71 Italian participants, coming from different cities: Rome, Siena, Florence; 1 participant from Greece, Athens; 2 participants from Germany, Berlin; 2 participants from France, Paris; 2 participants from Poland, Białystok; 2 participants from Hungary, Budapest.
The public events were attended by about 900 people.


5° EVENT 5 - Berlin, Germany, November 29th - December 01th, 2017

Focus of the event was: "Intercultural Dialogue; examples of good practice from below ";
The first day of the meeting, November 29th, was focused on the meeting with local relevant experiences of working with migrants, and particularly:
- the delegate for work with refugees of the Evangelical Church;
- the movement "Welcome to Falkensee", local organization of volunteers helping refugees. During this visit an autobiographical workshop was opened, open to the public, on the theme of migration, to create a public exhibition closing the event.
In the second day we met other relevant experiences:
- the experience of decades with migrants from the Awo organization in Kreuzberg, a historically intercultural district of Berlin;
- the occupation Café Refugio, a hotel that accommodates refugee families (with the permission of the owners of the structure), self-organized by the migrants themselves, with the support of international volunteers.
In the evening the public exhibition Volkshochschule Falkensee was inaugurated, with the presence of local policy representatives, made with photographs and writings of the participants of the workshops of the previous day.
The last day, December 01th, saw a meeting of the international working group to implement the project activities, especially in relation to the "Narrating the dialogue" competition.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 52 people, of whom: 30 German participants Berlin and neighboring localities; 14 Italian participants from Rome and Siena; 1 participant from Greece, Athens; 2 participants from France, Paris; 2 participants from Poland Poland, Białystok; 2 participants from Hungary, Budapest; 1 participant from Spain, Donostia San Sebastian.
The public events were attended by about 300 people.


6° EVENT 6 - Strasburg, France, March 14-15, 2018

Focus of the event was: "How to develop intercultural dialogue in Europe?".
The first day of the event was focused on the meeting at the European Parliament, where in the presence of some representatives of Parliament, the project was presented and above all the document "10 points for a new migration policy in Europe".
The evening saw a pubblic screeming of the documentary “When Paul Came Over the Sea” , Cinema Star St Exupery.
The second day saw two important activities:
- Meeting at the Council of Europe with the political Adviser from the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on migration and refugees.
- pubblic meeting with the winners of the competition "Narrating Europe", in the Lieu d’Europe.
The event, with regard to international panels and working groups, saw the participation of 50 people, including: 19 participants from France, Paris; 17 participants from Italy coming from Rome and Siena; 2 participants from Greece, Athens; 4 participants from Poland, Białystok; 3 participants from Hungary, Budapest; 3 participants from Spain, Donostia San Sebastian; 4 participants from Germany.
The public events were attended by about 100 people.

B - PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES

Between one event and another, preparatory activities were carried out, with different aims:

1. researches, collection of experiences and creation of materials about the event’s theme. This have been complied by work groups of every participating countries, that included citizens (included persons not involved before in activities of active citizenship), experts, stakeholders (including migrants).
Working methods of the preparatory activities have been:
- cooperatives’methods;
- autobiographical methods and biographical interviews;
2. Creative Call - At the beginning of the project it have been done a creative call to identify the project’s logo;
3. European Contest - Among the preparatory activities very important the realization of the European contest “Dialogues across Europe”;
4. Other activities concerned the creation of communication’s materials and tools.

C - DISSEMINATION’S TOOLS AND ACTIVITIES

Part of the activities of the working groups was dedicated to dissemination actions, which were carried out through various actions and different tools:

a. Creation of effective communication products; very important have been the use of participants’ experiences, especially thanks to the competition “Narrating the Dialogue";
b. The project’s website have been created as interactive web environment, as users could upload their stories (text and video); the visitors could read the stories and the diaries of the events by a geographical map;
c. The European contest “Narrating the Dialogue” aimed to collect experiences of intercultural dialogue, have been a big opportunity of dissemination throughout Europe. In some countries, namely Italy, Germany and Hungary, workshop on autobiographical writing have been organized in order to spread the competition, and collect stories;
d. The project facebook page have been a further important dissemination tool;
e. Last, the International events have seen the organization of conferences with a wider participation, with the presence of citizens, civil society organization, representative of local, national and European institutions, and also the organization of other cultural events (concerts, screening of documentaries and films…), that have involved many participants.
